Car tags, title and driver’s license

Register your vehicle. Once you live in Rutherford County, the county clerk says you must apply for a Tennessee title and registration. Bring your out-of-state title (or, if a lender holds it, your current registration and the lienholder’s name and address), your driver’s license or other ID, and proof of residency. The state’s revenue department says new residents should register within 30 days.

You surrender your old license. Drivers coming from some states must also bring a motor vehicle record from their former state; see the department’s MVR page.

Property taxes and tax relief

Homes inside the city get two bills: a city bill and a Rutherford County bill. The county trustee runs the state’s tax relief program for qualifying homeowners 65 and older, disabled homeowners and disabled veterans, and a senior tax freeze; both need an application. Rates, due dates and deadlines are in our property taxes guide.

Schools

Murfreesboro has two public systems: Murfreesboro City Schools for pre-K through sixth grade and Rutherford County Schools for grades 7-12. Zones, calendars and state grades are in our schools guide.
