Murfreesboro’s electricity comes from Middle Tennessee Electric (MTE), a not-for-profit cooperative founded in 1936 and headquartered in the city. MTE says it serves more than 750,000 Tennesseans through 345,000-plus accounts in 11 Middle Tennessee counties, mainly Rutherford, Cannon, Williamson and Wilson. If your lights go out, check your breakers first, then report it.

Who to call

  • Report an outage (automated): 877-777-0215

How to report an outage

  1. Check your breakers or fuses to rule out a problem inside your home. Look at the meter box; if it or the wires look damaged, call a licensed electrician, who may need to make repairs before MTE can reconnect you.
  2. Report it in the myMTE app or web portal, on the automated outage line (877-777-0215) or with member support (877-777-9020). MTE’s FAQ also lists an automated line at 1-877-777-9111, where you enter your account number, meter number or phone number, or speak your address.
  3. Watch the map at mtemc.outagemap.coop.

Don’t assume MTE knows your house is dark. It can see damage to substations and main circuits, but an outage at a single home may not show up until someone reports it.

Get outage alerts

  • In myMTE, add your cellphone under Contact Methods, turn on text notifications, verify the number and choose your outage alerts under Manage Notifications.
  • Sign up for Alert Rutherford, the county’s emergency alert system, for severe weather and road updates.
  • Keep your phone and email current with MTE so it can reach you.

How MTE restores power

Hospitals, police, fire stations and other public safety sites come first. Then MTE works in three steps:

  1. Substations and the main distribution lines leaving them.
  2. Tap lines that branch off the main lines.
  3. Smaller pockets of members, then individual homes.

That is why a truck may pass your house without stopping, and why a neighbor on another circuit or phase can have power while you don’t. MTE says elected officials and employees get no special treatment. It does not cut power ahead of a tornado or storm unless the Tennessee Valley Authority or emergency managers tell it to.

Medical needs and generators

  • Life support: members who depend on medical equipment at home can join MTE’s Life Support Program with a doctor’s verification. It flags the account for billing problems but does not guarantee faster restoration, so have a backup plan. Questions: 877-777-9020.
  • Generators: never run one indoors. Only a licensed electrician should connect a generator to your panel; a bad hookup can send power back onto the lines and endanger crews. Tell MTE at 877-777-9020 if you use one.
  • Service pulled off the house: MTE owns the line to your connection point; you are responsible from the meter into the house, including the mast. An electrician must repair it first, and a local code inspection may be needed.

Food safety

MTE passes on the USDA’s guidance: a full freezer stays frozen about two days, a half-full one about one day, and a closed refrigerator keeps food cold about four hours. The fridge should be at or below 40 degrees when power returns.
