Two public school districts share Murfreesboro. Murfreesboro City Schools (MCS) runs 13 schools for pre-K through sixth grade inside its own district boundaries; its office is at 2552 S. Church St., 615-893-2313. Rutherford County Schools (RCS) runs every public middle and high school and the elementary schools for the rest of the city; its central office is at 2240 Southpark Drive, 615-893-5812. MCS students move on to RCS schools for middle and high school.
School zones do not follow city limits. Several RCS schools with Murfreesboro mailing addresses (Brown’s Chapel, Buchanan, Poplar Hill, Walter Hill and Wilson) sit outside the city, and Rockvale High in Rockvale serves much of southwest Murfreesboro. The Rutherford County Board of Education redrew every middle school zone on Dec. 11, 2025, for the opening of Poplar Hill Middle in August 2026, according to the district’s 2026-27 rezoning page.
