East Main Street runs from the Public Square toward Middle Tennessee State University, lined with 19th- and early 20th-century homes. The city protects part of it as a local historic zone, and the streets north of it along North Maney Avenue form a second historic district around Oaklands Park.

What this means for you

Part of our Murfreesboro neighborhoods guide.

Where it is

The city’s Historic Zoning Commission publishes two maps for this part of town: the East Main Street Historic Zone map, the local district where the commission reviews exterior changes, and the North Maney Avenue and East Main Street National Register districts map. The city’s downtown neighborhood map from the Murfreesboro 2035 plan places the East Main Street Historic District east of the Square, between downtown and the university, with Oaklands Park to the north.

The area is inside city limits and in ZIP code 37130. Main roads: East Main Street, North Maney Avenue, North and South Highland Avenue and East Lytle Street.

Owning a home in the historic zone: the commission “studies, recommends and oversees historic district boundaries and guidelines for renovation of existing structures or the building of new structures,” the city says. It has nine members and meets monthly at 3:30 p.m. in the City Council Chambers, 111 W. Vine St. Forms are on the city’s historic zoning forms page.

Schools

The area is in the Murfreesboro City Schools zone for pre-K through sixth grade; check which city school your street attends with the district’s WebQuery lookup or call 615-893-2313.
