North Thompson Lane: what to expect
TDOT is widening North Thompson Lane to four lanes with a center turn lane, curb and gutter, sidewalks on both sides and a shared-use path from the West Fork Stones River bridge to Memorial Boulevard. The bridge over the West Fork will be replaced. TDOT estimates the job will be done in the second quarter of 2030 and says that date may change.
- Lane closures are allowed from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. when school is in session, and to 4 p.m. when it is not.
- Bike lanes are closed for the whole job.
- The Thompson Lane Trailhead canoe ramp is closed. TDOT points boaters to the Manson Pike ramp (about three miles south), the West Fork ramp or Nice Mill Recreation Area.
- A section of the Stones River Greenway will close for the bridge work. TDOT has not posted dates.
- McFadden Farm stays open by way of Van Cleve Lane.
TDOT sends a monthly project newsletter and posts weekly lane closures on its news page.
New Salem Highway
The last of three sections, about 2.4 miles from west of Veterans Parkway to Cason Lane, began in February 2025. It widens the road to two 12-foot lanes each way with a center turn lane, curbs and sidewalks, and rebuilds the culverts over Armstrong Branch and Puckett Creek. TDOT expects it to be done on or before December 2027. The section from I-24 to Old Fort Parkway opened Jan. 17, 2025.
I-24 Choice Lanes
TDOT and DriveTN will add two Choice Lanes in each direction on I-24 between I-40 and I-840, across Davidson and Rutherford counties. Drivers who use the new lanes will pay a fee; the existing lanes stay free. TDOT said Oct. 27 that construction will cost $9.2 billion and the lanes are expected to open in 2035. Financial close is expected in the third quarter of 2027.
TDOT and DriveTN will hold two drop-in open houses with the same information at each:
- Tuesday, Nov. 17, 3 to 7 p.m. at Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville
- Wednesday, Nov. 18, 3 to 7 p.m. at the Smyrna Event Center
