Murfreesboro firefighters used a thermal imaging camera to find a man trapped upstairs in a burning Kinsale Avenue home Oct. 15. He, a dog and a cat were rescued.
Murfreesboro firefighters rescued a man trapped on the second floor of a burning house on Kinsale Avenue on the evening of Thursday, Oct. 15. They also brought out a dog and a cat.
The Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department described the rescue in a city release the next day.
What happened
Crews arrived around 7:40 p.m. and found heavy fire on the outside of the house, the department said.
Thick black smoke left little visibility inside. Firefighters went in anyway and used a thermal imaging camera to find the man upstairs.
He was checked by medics at the scene and then taken to the hospital for further examination, the department said. It did not give his condition. No other injuries were reported.
Crews put the fire out quickly, the department said.
The response
The department sent:
- Ladders 11, 1 and 2
- Engines 10, 7 and 9
- Rescues 11 and 4
- Battalion Chiefs 1 and 2
- Safety Officers 1 and 2
- an assistant fire marshal, fire investigators and other personnel
The cause
The cause is under investigation by the department’s Fire Marshal’s Office. The department has not said what started the fire. We will update this story if it does.
What it means for you
The man was found because crews could see heat through smoke too thick to see through. Not every fire ends that way.
The federal government’s Ready.gov home fire advice includes:
- smoke alarms on every level of the home, including the basement
- two ways out of each room, in case the main way is blocked by fire or smoke
- practicing the escape plan twice a year, including feeling your way out in the dark
- sleeping with the bedroom door closed
